Exclusive: Former Sam’s Club China CMO Tipped to Lead Starbucks JV Operations at Boyu Capital

Former Sam’s Club China Chief Merchandising Officer Zhang Qing is reportedly set to join Boyu Capital as an Operating Partner, where she will oversee operational matters for the newly formed Starbucks China joint venture. As of publication, Boyu has not commented on the appointment, while Starbucks said no internal announcement has been made; the hire remains pending official confirmation.

Zhang joined Sam’s Club in 2017 and was promoted to Senior Vice President and CMO in 2018. She played a central role in optimizing Sam’s product mix and building its differentiated private-label portfolio, frequently stressing that “product differentiation is the core of the membership model” and rejecting cost-cutting measures that compromise quality. With prior stints at P&G, McKinsey, Whirlpool, and Polaris Industries, Zhang is widely credited with sharp consumer insight and sourcing expertise—assets seen as valuable for Starbucks’ localization and supply chain upgrades.

The backdrop is Starbucks’ strategic partnership with Boyu: announced in November 2024 and finalized in April 2025, the JV sees Boyu hold a 60% stake in Starbucks’ China retail business, while Starbucks retains 40% and continues to license its brand and IP. Excluded from the deal are the Kunshan Coffee Innovation Park, Yunnan farmer support center, ready-to-drink coffee (via Ting Hsin), and Nestlé global coffee alliance operations. The agreement shifts more than 8,000 Starbucks stores in China from wholly owned operations to a licensed franchise model under local control.

Boyu—whose past deals include assisting Alibaba’s share buyback from Yahoo and investing in Mixue Ice City—brings deep consumer-sector experience. Starbucks aims to nearly double its U.S.-outside store count to 40,000 globally, with China alone targeted to grow from 8,000 to 15,000–20,000 locations. Boyu’s local network is expected to accelerate Starbucks’ expansion into smaller cities and emerging markets.
